AQR Spark - Effective Communication |
Aug 2010 |
We are now fully booked, please watch out for the next Spark event to be held in October
AQR Spark introduces its next evening workshop event:
‘Effective Communication’
Monday 9th August, 6.30-9.30pm
Session Leaders: Teresa Garfield and Steve Barnes (GarfieldBarnes)
At: PHD, The Telephone Exchange
5 North Crescent, London WC1E 7PH
Cost £25 + VAT for AQR Members
£30 + VAT for Non Members
About the session
Have you noticed that with some people you get on so easily you could almost finish off each other’s sentences, whilst with others it’s clunky, awkward and uncomfortable? That’s because we each have different communication styles – almost akin to speaking different languages.
This workshop offers a potent and user-friendly model for helping you connect, co-operate and influence clients, research participants and colleagues (etc.), and develop on-going effective, productive relationships with them.
More specifically, you’ll come out of the workshop;
• Having learnt about the four major communication styles
• Having discovered your own communication style
• Being able to recognise the communication style of others
• Knowing how to adapt your style in order to effectively communicate with people who communicate in the other styles.
This workshop promises to be thoroughly engaging and useful. It’ll comprise of training from the facilitators, enhanced with hands-on participation from us all. A detailed workshop manual will be offered to all participants.
We’re starting at 6.30pm prompt to ensure we get the most out of the evening. Drinks and nibbles will be provided throughout. All are welcome to stay for post-workshop drinks afterwards in a nearby pub.
As with all Spark events, the workshop is designed to be stimulating, unthreatening, fun, and for all members and non-members, qual practitioners and clients. Please spread the word. Places are, however, limited to the first 28 bookings to ensure we have a workable session; please book early to avoid disappointment.

Residential Foundation Course |
Nov 2010 |
The Residential Foundation Course runs over 3 days and 3 nights taking place 2-5 November 2010
“We have a history of sending our younger researchers to the AQR Foundation Course and we have always been extremely pleased with the results. The biggest and most noticeable difference is that their confidence takes a sudden upturn, its great to have moderators that have already started on their way to the level of competence that we aspire to at this company. We love the fact that it takes the pure enthusiasm of our researchers and combines it with invaluable tuition providing us, and them, with the grounding for a long and distinguished career in market research”… Firefish
'Year after year this course has provided the bedrock for researchers to appreciate the distinctiveness of qualitative enquiry’
‘The course allowed me the time to get into the qualitative mindset and ways of thinking’
‘For the first time I understood the difference between findings and insights’
‘Because of the course, running groups, I can now be less stressed out and give people space to talk’
‘It has shown me that it is OK to take chances and experiment’
‘For me it established the importance of understanding the meaning of words in their context'
The course is designed to foster a qualitative imagination and to introduce and sharpen core skills Delegates on this course span those at the start of their careers as qualitative researchers, experienced professionals who need to add qual skills to their portfolio and researchers with a couple of years of experience who would like to deepen their understanding and application of qualitative techniques.
At the heart of the course is what constitutes a masterclass in moderating, the opportunity to have your moderating skills developed and honed by our expert tutors. Built around case studies, the course covers interpreting the brief and designing your study, optimising elicitation and listening skills, the use of enabling and projective techniques, examples of different styles of interpretation and analyses, and constructing and delivering the presentation. Throughout there is an emphasis
not just on qualitative best practice but also on building and maintaining positive client relationships.
These are some of the things that delegates and companies said about it last year:
“I found the course had a great pace which didn't overwhelm or intimidate. The practical side of the course enabled me to try out various techniques I'd always been
curious about or that were new to me and it was brilliant to meet other qualitative researchers at varying levels who shared experiences and ideas with me. In essence
I loved it, and if my employer would pay for me to do it again I would in a heartbeat. It’s been invaluable throughout my first year in qualitative research and I find that
I am still very much using it today” (Rachel Cox MediaCom)
"As a planner at an ad agency I am not moderating groups all the time, and did not feel confident to do so. The course gave me all the skills and confidence I needed
to set up and moderate groups in those ad hoc pitch situations. It also gave me an invaluable insight into the qualitative research process from writing a brief to
sampling to putting together a debrief your client will love. An absolutely brilliant course!" (Kathryn Ellis DLKW & Partners)
The course will be held over 2-5 November 2010 at Wyboston Lakes Conference Centre, Bedfordshire.
