AQR Special Event: Social Silences – Talking about taboos
***BOOKING CLOSED*** Social silences are topics which people avoid talking about. Things that are there but are regarded as taboo, or too difficult to address. Because they're not talked about, challenged or debated – sometimes viewpoints become tacitly accepted in society or an organisation. This interactive workshop aims to confront three social silences which surround qualitative research.
First well debate how social class, an often unspoken but defining element of identity in the UK, influences our research methodologies, analysis, and engagement.
Well invite a thoughtful exploration of how people talk about race. In an era of heightened sensitivity to 'difference' and a deeper recognition of the hidden power dynamics shaping our interactions, well delve into the nuanced implications.
Well take an unflinching view of masculinity and the manosphere asking where regressive models of masculinity, based on power and dominance, have lead us? Well reflect on why certain conversations are considered taboo within the male world and what the unintended consequences are for boys and young men.
All the speakers will consider the practice of "moderator matching" aligning researchers with participants based on characteristics like race or gender. Well explore alternative viewpoints whether it is necessity for sensitivity and respect, or if it represents a denial of the qualitative relationship's transformative power.
Well combine presentations from experts, group exercises and discussion to get to the core of these issues.
No expertise is required! The aim is for us to listen, reflect and participate as a group on what this all means for our professional community.
Together well challenge the status quo and reimagine the future of qualitative inquiry.
