Moderating Skills Workshop

A two day intensive workshop marrying theory with hands on practical moderating experience, tutor support and feedback.

Devised and run by Ruth Preston of Peppermint with experienced tutors Matt Dobbin, Atticus Research; Greig Burnside, Greenlight Research and Judith Wardle, Wardle McLean

A supportive tutor based workshop, offering practical moderator skills training: Theory and skills will be instilled and practiced through a seminar session, a taster of 3x projective techniques will be experienced before lunch. Techniques and skills will be fine tuned in your tutor groups (5-6 delegates) before being put into practice when you moderate a live focus group on day two.

Delegates are supported throughout by their tutor and tutor group peers via constructive feedback and development tips at the end of day two. Throughout the workshop tutor group interaction will be used to share experiences and to build confidence and skills as well as address delegates’ personal issues and concerns around moderating.

Workshop Goals: To understand a moderators’ numerous roles; To have understood and developed listening and probing skills to enable curious exploration of consumers; to moderate without unduly leading responses; to have an awareness of group dynamics that will be fine tuned as experience mounts; to have confidence in and tips on dealing with difficult respondents; work to a brief; optimize your personal guide; learn about working with stimulus material and to provide practical experience in moderating within a safe and supportive environment.

This workshop is suitable for a wide range of delegates including: Practicing qualitative researchers with under one year’s experience and anyone wishing to become more familiar with qualitative research methods in a practical way. But be aware, this is a hands-on course and it is therefore not suitable if you're not prepared to give moderating a go (or if you’ve run 40+ groups already).

Delegates will be in 4 syndicate groups with their own tutor. A maximum of 24 delegates will be taken.
