2 Day Moderating Skills Workshop

*** PROVISIONALLY FULL - PLEASE CONTACT AQR TO GO ON THE WAITING LIST*** AQR Moderating Skills Workshop - This two day intensive workshop will marry theory with hands on practical moderating experience, tutor support and feedback.

Devised and run by Ruth Preston of Peppermint with 3 experienced tutors
Greig Burnside, Green Light Research
Matt Dobbin, Atticus Research

Theory and skills will be instilled and practiced through a seminar session, a taster of projective techniques will be experienced over lunch. Techniques and skills will be fine tuned in your tutor groups (5-6 delegates) before being put into practice when you moderate a live focus group on day two.

Delegates are supported throughout by their tutor and tutor group peers and given constructive feedback for further development at the end of day two. Throughout the workshop tutor group interaction will be used to share experiences and build confidence and skills as well as address delegates’ personal issues and concerns in moderating.

Workshop Goals:

  • To understand a moderator's numerous rolls
  • To offer a wealth of tips, tricks and engaging stories on how to moderate
  • To understand and develop listening and probing skills
  • To moderate without asking leading questions
  • To moderate with a view to unpicking hidden or unspoken meaning
  • To have an awareness of group dynamics
  • To have confidence in and tips on dealing with difficult respondents
  • To learn about working with stimulus material
  • To provide practical, hands-on experience in moderating within a safe and supportive environment

Top marks for Mod Skills Workshop
A successful course is one that tackles a topic requiring high levels of concentration, combining theory and practice, and leaves attendees energised while boosting their confidence.
Moderating for all levels
Given that a large part of the theory is covered online beforehand, attendees at the Hands-On Mod Skills course can make the most of the expert tutors on hand.
High-energy route to moderating
AQR's moderating skills course is one of the most popular on the calendar, and it's good to know that it's still giving delegates the tools they need for the job.
A client view of Moderating Skills Workshop
It may seem a little unusual for a client to attend an AQR moderating course, but this was one of the most beneficial I have been on. I now have a much greater appreciation of a moderator's skills and techniques and feel that I am able to add real value when working with our research agencies to plan groups and write discussion guides.
Bonding at Moderating Skills Workshop
I'll confess I was skeptical having moderated before, I wondered what the classroom could teach that would stack up against experience, and felt reluctant to sacrifice two days to listen to more generic tips and tricks.
Hands-on Moderating Skills
You would be forgiven for thinking that an all-day training course on a Friday, (and not just any Friday, but a below-freezing wet and damp Friday). is not your idea of a fun day out.
Becoming a curious child
Who remembers just what it's like to start moderating? The nerves, the uncertainty... Juliet Tate finds herself inspired by AQR's mod skills course.
