Hands on Moderating Skills

***FULLY BOOKED*** AQR's Hands on Moderating Skills Course.

We all remember what it was like when we were faced with our first group discussion…a mixture of ‘it can’t be that hard, can it?’ and ‘OMG, this is SO much harder than I thought’…or maybe that was just me? This one day course is designed to give researchers with 0 — 3 years’ experience a really hands-on opportunity to get to grips with the basics of moderating.

  • The course will kick off with a 30 minute online tutorial a few days before the full day course and that will set out some of the important theory behind group dynamics and what makes a great moderator. We’ll end the webinar with a briefing on your pre-assigned case studies and you will need to write a first draft of your discussion guide before the course (it will be reviewed with your tutor on the day so don’t worry if you haven’t written many before!)
  • The day itself will include a morning of exercises and tasks so everyone can ‘have a go’ at some practical moderating, such as, projective techniques and being aware of closed and open questioning. After lunch, each delegate will moderate 20 minutes of a group discussion and they’ll be given individual feedback afterwards.
  • It’s going to be a fast-paced and energetic day and the emphasis will be on just getting in there and having a go. 4 tutors will be on hand to provide their own hints and tips throughout the day. We’re not pretending you can crack moderating in just 8 hours but we firmly believe that the more chances you have to just get your hands a bit dirty, the better.

“It was a very hands on day which made the day very dynamic and engaging!”

“I really enjoyed the opportunity to moderate a section of a focus group. It was extremely useful gaining this experience and has made me feel much more confident about moderating in the future. It was also useful seeing other people moderate and their different styles.”

“Overall it was a really great day of training very useful and always great to gain some experiences and make that first group a bit less daunting”

“The tutors were all really helpful and very constructive in their feedback — very approachable”

“A really fun and equally productive day. Lots covered but never felt like it was going too fast. Challenging but supportive, great tutors and an interesting range of tools, techniques, teachings and demos.”
